  346. │ For a number of years children played a game called word square.  In this  │
  347. │ game letters of words spelled out the same word horizontally and verti-    │
  348. │ cally.  This was the birth of the crossword puzzle.  The first interlock-  │
  349. │ ing words across and down appeared in England sometime in the 19th century.│
  350. │ But it wasn't until Americans started working the crossword puzzle that    │
  351. │ it gained in huge popularity.  Arthur Wynne was the first to place a cross-│
  352. │ word puzzle in "Fun" the Sunday supplement of the New York World newspaper │
  353. │ December 21, 1913 and it gained in popularity immediately.  Eleven years   │
  354. │ later Simon and Schuster asked the World newspaper to allow them to pub-   │
  355. │ lish a complete book of crossword puzzles, using the writers of the World. │
  356. │ The idea of a book came from Simon's aunt who wanted to give a gift to a   │
  357. │ puzzle loving friend.  The book was such a hit that another was published  │
  358. │ and then more.  Today crossword puzzle books are published in every lang-  │
  359. │ uage with the exception of the Oriental languages which do not lend allow  │
  360. │ for across and down manipulation.                                          │

  795. │   Verso in which the emperor was making a thumbs down gesture.  The use of │

  797. │   to them.  Not only was the thumb used in an up and down motion but also  │
  798. │   in a side motion.  But what the significance of this was never was clear.│
  799. │   Today the use of the thumb up or down is easily understood and the side- │
  800. │   ways thumb is commonly used for hitchhiking.                             │
  801. │ * Women wearing high heels seems to be a custom that has been with us since│
  802. │   the seventeenth century.  The French invented this custom.  Though a     │
  803. │   great many people believe this was probably one of the worst customs to  │
  804. │   have around, since the wearing of high heels can cause all types of back │
  805. │   problems as well as foot problems.  Originally this custom was reserved  │
  806. │   to only the royal and upper class noble women who wanted to give the     │
  807. │   impression of being above all the common folks.  Well the common folks   │
  808. │   decided they liked the idea of elevating women on high heels because this│
  809. │   held them on the pedestal some men believed they belonged.               │

  973. │ dow I could see my son playing with the dogs in the back yard.  I took a   │
  974. │ deep breath and started thinking about his childhood versus mine.  Today,  │
  975. │ well today kids just don't know how to play.  They think they need some-   │
  976. │ thing electronic to play and have fun.  They just don't know.  I started   │
  977. │ thinking back to when I was a child.  I can remember, right after Christ-  │
  978. │ mas, all the kids in the neighborhood would go from house to house asking  │
  979. │ if we could help our neighbors take down their Christmas trees.  Having    │
  980. │ done so, we then took them to the end of the street, we lived on a dead    │
  981. │ end street, they didn't call them a cal-de-sac back then, and build a tree │
  982. │ fort.  We'd pack snow in around the open spaces left by the trees and use  │
  983. │ that spot as our resting place after having snowball fights and other      │
  984. │ silly kids games we played in the snow.  We actually believed the fort we  │
  985. │ had built was warm and toasty inside.  We felt warmer when we were in there│
  986. │ and away from the outside elements.  We even talked about sleeping out in  │
  987. │ the dead of winter inside our fort, knowing for certain we would all be    │
  988. │ just fine as long as we were inside our fort.                              │
  989. │ In the summer time I can remember playing outside long after darkness came.│
  990. │ We had one street light on our street and we would gather together under   │
  991. │ that street light.  We'd find an old can from someone's trash and play     │

  997. │ I can remember running to hide.  It was a hot, humid Illinois summer night │
  998. │ and I could feel the excitement of the game coursing through my being.  I  │
  999. │ would giggle to myself as I hid in the shadows of the huge old oak tree and│
  1000. │ watch the person who was 'it' race around trying to find someone, anyone   │
  1001. │ so they could pass the title of being 'it' on to them.  My son will never  │
  1002. │ feel that type of excitement or thrill.  I can still remember the feeling  │
  1003. │ when the person who was 'it' spotted you and both of you made a mad rush   │
  1004. │ to the can, placed carefully under the one glowing street light.  One runn-│
  1005. │ ing to kick the can and the other racing to tag it and yell ollie, ollie   │
  1006. │ oxen free, meaning everyone could run to the can now and not be it.        │
  1007. │ Yeah, those were the days!  Kids knew how to play and have fun.  We never  │
  1008. │ had to worry about being out at night.  Unless, of course, you had a big   │
  1009. │ brother.  Because big brother would always try to play some prank on you.  │
  1010. │ He'd always try to scare you somehow.  But even that was alright, because  │
  1011. │ once it happened a few times you came to expect it and even enjoyed the    │
  1012. │ game of being frightened by some stupid stunt he'd pull.                   │
  1013. │ But in spite of the pranks big brother played, he was the best one to crawl│
  1014. │ out the bedroom window with and sit on the porch roof and watch the stars  │
  1015. │ late at night on those hot summer days.  Who could sleep?  Air conditioning│

  1023. │ ing.  I stop and wonder, every once an a while, if my brother remembers    │
  1024. │ these talks or not, as I do.  No matter.                                   │
  1025. │ I can also remember walking, yeah, what a concept, walking, to the city    │
  1026. │ swimming pool.  We had to cut through a cemetery to get there quickly.  If │
  1027. │ we went around that cemetery it would take us easily a mile more in dis-   │
  1028. │ tance to get to the city pool.  If I walked with just my brother and his   │
  1029. │ friends, not taking any of my friends along, those big dumb jerks would    │
  1030. │ always go into the cemetery with me and start telling me some weird story  │
  1031. │ about the place and about mid-way through they took off running, leaving   │
  1032. │ me behind with fear rising quickly in my heart.  I tried, as hard as I     │
  1033. │ could, to stay up with them, but never could I.  They being boys and two   │
  1034. │ years older than me.  But even that, in retrospect, was fun and funny.  My │
  1035. │ brother was always paid back by me short sheeting his bed.                 │
  1036. │ My thoughts are pulled away from the past as my son comes back into the    │
  1037. │ house with the dogs romping in, still in a playful mood.  I call him over  │
  1038. │ and tell him about the game of kick the can.  I tell him everything, so    │
  1039. │ he and his friends can try playing it that night on the cal-de-sac we now  │

  1047. │ child playing kick the can, as they did once, spurs some hope in them as   │
  1048. │ well as brings back some of that childhood memories.  Each parent says     │
  1049. │ their child can play.  Darkness comes and the kids head out the door to    │
  1050. │ one street light on the cal-de-sac.  I can hear them playing and laughing  │
  1051. │ as the game gets underway.  About ten minutes or so goes by and I hear the │
  1052. │ familiar sound of the can being kicked down the pavement.  It bounces as   │
  1053. │ it hits then rolls.  Moments later my son walks back into the house.       │
  1054. │ "What happened to the game," I ask.                                        │
  1055. │ "We called it off," he says.                                               │
  1056. │ "Why?" I ask.                                                              │
  1057. │ "Because old Mrs. Doe told us she'd call the police if we didn't settle    │
  1058. │ down and stop making so much noise.  I'm going to play with my Sega Mom."  │
  1059. │ 'Old Mrs. Doe' was my age.  She was the only woman on the street without   │
  1060. │ children.  I guess she's forgotten what it was like to be a child.  Or     │
  1061. │ maybe, just maybe, she never was one.  Oh well, at least my son tried.  I  │

  1582. │        their way to the U.S.?                                              │

  1589. │        In 1797 another type of parachute was designed to be used to jump   │

  1740. │  development, Debbie's bungling discovery and Carpenter's low-cost         │
  1741. │  hardware systems would push Eeeek International into a new tax bracket    │
  1742. │  before the end of the second quarter. Yes, sales were projected to be up  │
  1743. │  forty percent, even in the repressed market, and possibilities for new    │
  1744. │  software & hardware development were virtually endless into the foresee-  │
  1745. │  able future.  The boss was certain to amass another fortune in 1993.      │
  1746. │                                                                            │
  1747. │  But something had turned the boss' attention away from the bright         │
  1748. │  prospects of her near future and toward the darker shadows of her past.   │
  1749. │  Maybe it was the weather.                                                 │
  1750. │                                                                            │
  1751. │  Contrary to popular myth, it had just finished raining in Southern        │
  1752. │  California for the last week and the usually smogged-in skies were as     │
  1753. │  clear, bright and sparkly as they were intended to be. Unlike the boss'   │
  1754. │  melancholy mood. It was as if the open skies allowed her to see the dark  │
  1755. │  clouds rolling in for a second week of storm.                             │

  1764. │  but she had a partial view of the rolling Hollywood Hills and the Santa   │
  1765. │  Monica Mountains to the north. And she was high enough that she could see │
  1766. │  due west along the Wilshire corridor halfway to the beautiful Pacific     │
  1767. │  Ocean.                                                                    │

  1774. │  shore to press her bare feet into the loose sand and sort out the         │
  1775. │  problems of the day.                                                      │

  1778. │  How many of my footprints had it recorded, clung to, and lost to the      │

  1790. │  But the memories hung in her mind like the early morning fog along the    │
  1791. │  coast - just out of reach, not quite clouding reality, but obscuring it   │
  1792. │  enough to allow the uncertainties of the soul to come pouring in.         │

  1794. │  What days those were! When she had faced the publishing business single   │
  1795. │  handedly. And had bluffed her will onto an unruly crew of anti-social     │
  1796. │  misanthropes.                                                             │

  1800. │  And the joke was that she had won. She had parlayed a "writing for hire"  │
  1801. │  sub-contracting service into an internationally successful magazine.      │

  1812. │  techniques. Would you be amenable to some sort of a share arrangement?"   │

  1814. │  Informational processing techniques? KR thought. You mean that stupid     │
  1815. │  little alteration I made to a hunk of Public Domain software? "What sort  │
  1816. │  of arrangement?" she had asked, bluffing as usual.                        │
  1817. │                                                                            │
  1818. │  "We were thinking of six large figures," the pinched mouth said.          │
  1819. │                                                                            │
  1820. │  And KR had scoffed. "Yeah! Well, I was thinking of eight small ones!"     │
  1821. │                                                                            │
  1822. │  And with the proceeds of that conversation, the boss had moved out of the │
  1823. │  printing press era and into the age of computer media. She had also moved │
  1824. │  out of a cozy seventeen floor Manhattan Beach co-op and into a            │
  1825. │  high-profile downtown skyscraper.                                         │

  1827. │  "And the pressure has been increasing ever since," the boss muttered.     │

  1836. │  nerds. Dan Powers was in the street every day and would come back to the  │
  1837. │  office with stories brimming with the sights and sounds of the city. The  │
  1838. │  "girls" - Constance North, Dorothy Ditsmire & Holly Daze - would keep the │
  1839. │  corporate ears abuzz with their ribald society gossip. Manfred and Amanda │
  1840. │  would peer knowingly about the offices and make their pronouncements from │
  1841. │  "the other side." And there was effeminate Seymore Puddly as well as Art  │
  1842. │  I. Whittay, Marvin Hopps, Jake, Glo Curtis!  And how about Crystanna?     │
  1843. │  Sensitive, insightful Crystanna Jaye Anders. Whenever the boss yearned for│
  1844. │  a true friend, she missed C.J. above all.                                 │
  1845. │                                                                            │
  1846. │  Those were good days, attempting to fathom bizarre etchings of Captain    │
  1847. │  Quake Zyzukka, or fending off the offensive insistences of William        │
  1848. │  Tweeter, Ph.D. and the provocative suggestivity of Vanesa del Teaso.      │
  1849. │  Doctor T. R. Ustme was a bore, but the boss could lament the passing of   │
  1850. │  "Bill" Booty, world traveler and chronicler. For all his boastful         │
  1851. │  bravado, he meant only to enlighten.                                      │

  1860. │  though she couldn't stop the rueful little smile from twisting her lips.  │
  1861. │  "Time to think about the present and the future!"  She could not have     │
  1862. │  chosen more appropriate words. For at that very moment she heard the      │
  1863. │  present knocking on her door.                                             │

  1865. │  "Is this it, then? We're certain of the breech?"                          │

  1867. │  "There can be no question of it. I didn't want to bring this in, but I    │

  1870. │  "Yes, I understand," KR said waving Razor's reluctance aside. "You did    │

  1872. │  Silence hung in the air like the boss' earlier mood.                      │

  1874. │  Things had been going to well; something HAD to break. Maybe that's what  │
  1875. │  her mood had been trying to warn her.                                     │

  1884. │  she didn't wish to give her Sales Manager any reason to gossip or send out│
  1885. │  any signs of alarm. Best to keep her busy, as if nothing was wrong.       │
  1886. │                                                                            │
  1887. │  "Proceed with the advertising development as scheduled," the boss said    │
  1888. │  resorting to her old tactic, the bluff, "but hold off on the launch date  │
  1889. │  until I look into this."                                                  │
  1890. │                                                                            │
  1891. │  "Very well," Razor said doubtfully.                                       │
  1892. │                                                                            │
  1893. │  "Well? Hop to it!" the boss said. One thing she couldn't stand was having │
  1894. │  employees with worried looks hanging around her desk.                     │

  1896. │  She pondered the situation for a moment and then punched an intercom      │
  1897. │  button.                                                                   │
  1898. │                                                                            │
  1899. │  "Yes, Ms. Taghadossi?" said a voice from the reception desk.              │

  1908. │  affirmative reply finally came and the boss shut down the intercom.       │
  1909. │                                                                            │
  1910. │  No telling where Gabriel was. Maybe the Polo Lounge or her club or her    │
  1911. │  estate up in the Palisades. Maybe she was lunching with the Mayor or a    │
  1912. │  Senator or two. The boss had no way of keeping up with her.  She spun on  │
  1913. │  her designer director's chair and resumed her contemplation of the city.  │
  1914. │  As she had anticipated, clouds were rolling in from the west, dark, huge, │
  1915. │  rolling things that stretched into the heavens & blackened the sky. And   │
  1916. │  suddenly all the boss' hopes for the new year were as bleak as the weather│
  1917. │  growing outside her window. There was only one task bleaker than facing   │
  1918. │  the coming troubles, the boss thought. Then, like she often did when she  │
  1919. │  was mulling over her problems, she spoke aloud to herself.                │
  1920. │                                                                            │
  1921. │  "How am I going to tell the Chairwoman our new software has been stolen?" │

  1997. │ I did not know.  But I knew I had to keep running.  The feeling of         │
  1998. │ terror that haunted me was unmistakable.  It was not fear but absolute     │
  1999. │ terror.  When I reached the bottom of the flight of stairs, there in       │
  2000. │ front of me stood Anna.  "What are you doing here?" I shirked.  "You       │
  2001. │ can not be here.  You can not be here." I had not stopped moving away      │
  2002. │ from the stairs, in spite of Anna's presence.  She extended her arm as     │
  2003. │ if to stop me from going further.  I moved past her and ran through the    │
  2004. │ tree lined glade that lay before me.  When I reached the other side of     │
  2005. │ the glade I was stopped by a blinding light.  I looked before me and       │
  2006. │ there stood Anna.  I turned and looked behind me as if checking to see     │
  2007. │ if the thing which I ran from was catching up to me.  I was also trying    │
  2008. │ to figure out how Anna got across the glade so quickly.  When I turned     │
  2009. │ back towards her again, she simply said calmly, "Don't go on this          │
  2010. │ trip."                                                                     │

  2012. │ I woke with a start.  It was only a dream.  I had fallen asleep at my      │
  2013. │ desk again.  I surveyed the area, I was in my apartment and all            │
  2014. │ appeared to be normal.  I forced myself upright in my chair and wiped      │
  2015. │ the perspiration from my forehead and face.  Then leaned back in my        │

  2021. │ started not too long ago.  Actually they started when I made my            │
  2022. │ decision to make this trip.  This one dream I have had for the last        │
  2023. │ four nights.  Every night exactly the same.  Every night I felt the        │
  2024. │ terror building and yet did not know why.  And every night Anna was        │
  2025. │ there trying to stop me.                                                   │
  2026. │                                                                            │
  2027. │ It became quite apparent from my dreams this vacation was not going to     │
  2028. │ be like any other vacation I have ever experienced.  The oddities of       │
  2029. │ the events occurring in my dreams regarding this vacation are not to be    │
  2030. │ explained.  At least I hope they are not to be explained, because the      │
  2031. │ explanation would be extremely bizarre.                                    │
  2032. │                                                                            │
  2033. │ It was almost summer vacation.  School would be out soon.  This was        │
  2034. │ important to me, for I am a teacher.  I teach junior high school in Los    │
  2035. │ Angeles, California. I was finishing the final test papers of my           │
  2036. │ students when I began thinking about my trip to Europe in the very near    │
  2037. │ future.  It dawned on me the near future was only two weeks away.  I       │
  2038. │ still had many things to do, besides finish the papers which lay in        │
  2039. │ front of me.  I also had to pack, make arrangements to stop the mail,      │

  2045. │ arrangements with my Mother to take her out to dinner before I leave.      │
  2046. │ I live in a nice, comfortable three story apartment building.  It is a     │
  2047. │ secure building so there would not be much to be concerned about while     │
  2048. │ I was on my long awaited vacation.                                         │
  2049. │                                                                            │
  2050. │ Normally I spent my summers going out on digs.  Archeology has become a    │
  2051. │ passionate hobby.  When I was in college, I took several courses in        │
  2052. │ archeology and fell in love with the field.  Frequently, my former         │
  2053. │ professors from college, ask me to join them on summer digs.  My           │
  2054. │ expenses are paid and so am I.  It turned out to be profitable hobby.      │
  2055. │                                                                            │
  2056. │ My attention was drawn, not to the papers and work before me but the       │
  2057. │ airline ticket laying at the top of the desk.  I picked it up and          │
  2058. │ glanced at it.  It said: Ms. Carol Hendrick, Los Angeles to New York,      │
  2059. │ 6-19, New York to London 6-20, London to Salzburg 6-25.  Again my mind     │
  2060. │ began to wonder.  I had friends living in London I wanted to see, but      │
  2061. │ would only stay there briefly.  I had met Rod and Audrey on a previous     │
  2062. │ trip to Europe.  When I was in grad school, I took a summer off and        │
  2063. │ went to Great Britain to take some courses at the University in London.    │

  2068. │ I met Audrey at the University.  We spent the summer going to plays at     │
  2069. │ the HayMarket Theater and others theaters in that area, not far from       │
  2070. │ Piccadilly Circus.  Now Audrey stars in some of those theaters we saw      │
  2071. │ so many plays.  It was during that same summer, Rod and Audrey met.  I     │
  2072. │ did not get to attend their wedding, for it was in October and I was in    │
  2073. │ school, but did visit them the following summer.                           │
  2074. │                                                                            │
  2075. │ After London, then on to Salzburg.  Something I had wanted to do for       │
  2076. │ some time but never did.  Not for any reasons other than just              │
  2077. │ procrastinating.  My adventure would be to go to Salzburg then take a      │
  2078. │ bus tour through the Black Forest.  I had thought of driving by myself,    │
  2079. │ but decided against it because of concern in getting lost.  Besides, a     │
  2080. │ vacation is suppose to relieve pressure.  I figured this would not be      │
  2081. │ accomplished if I drove.  The sound of the dog next door barking           │
  2082. │ brought me back to the work at hand.  I engrossed myself in my students    │
  2083. │ papers.  They desired school to be over but what they did not realize      │
  2084. │ is I was just as eager as well.  Don't misunderstand me, I enjoy           │
  2085. │ teaching.  I find it challenging and very educational.  I learn a lot      │
  2086. │ from the students as well as try to teach them a lot.  I hoped they        │
  2087. │ could use what I taught later in their life in a job.  But, with drugs,    │

  2092. │ gangs, and general crimes of theft for money for drugs, then the deaths    │
  2093. │ of my friend Anna and my two students, this was more than enough for       │
  2094. │ me.  I needed a vacation.                                                  │
  2095. │                                                                            │
  2096. │ It had been an especially hard year for me.  Two of my students died       │
  2097. │ from drug overdoses.  All the other instructors said it was just a sign    │
  2098. │ of the times.  I did not believe this.  A tragedy of our time, but         │
  2099. │ hopefully not a sign.  Both students were bright and good achievers.       │
  2100. │ No life should be wasted in such a manner.  It angered me at the time,     │
  2101. │ and still does for that matter.  They set out to commit suicide and        │
  2102. │ accomplished their goal.  They just went the long way round to do so.      │
  2103. │ Before the shock of their deaths had worn off a good friend of mine, a     │
  2104. │ nun, Sister Anna Katherine died from a sudden illness.  She came down      │
  2105. │ with the flu, which turned to pneumonia and within three days was dead.    │
  2106. │                                                                            │
  2107. │ Nothing seemed to have any effect on the pneumonia, it just got hold of    │
  2108. │ her and that was that.  Anna and I had gone to school together.  We        │
  2109. │ became friends when we were eight years old and remained good friends      │
  2110. │ for all those years.  Her death was very upsetting to me.  So I looked     │
  2111. │ forward to the holiday with great enthusiasm.  Hoping with anticipation    │

  2118. │ The term ended without further incident and I soon found myself flying     │
  2119. │ to New York.  I spent one night there, enjoyed a theater performance       │
  2120. │ and then on to London.  The euphoria of the trip had, by now enchanted     │
  2121. │ me.  The anticipation of being somewhere I had never been, Austria.        │
  2122. │ Seeing things I had never seen before was delirium.  The normal things     │
  2123. │ took place on the flight. dinner, a movie, I had one drink and then        │
  2124. │ decided to try and sleep.                                                  │
  2125. │                                                                            │
  2126. │ The hum of the jet engines droned on into my ears.  Their sound induced    │
  2127. │ a restfulness that encouraged sleep.                                       │
  2128. │                                                                            │
  2129. │ I found myself running down a highway.  The highway was empty of cars      │
  2130. │ and other people.  When I ran for what seemed to be several blocks I       │
  2131. │ came to the top of a small hill.  I ran down it, quickly.  When I          │
  2132. │ reached the bottom there stood Anna.  She extended her arm and motioned    │
  2133. │ for me to stop.  I continued running, down the highway, past Anna.  I      │
  2134. │ did not want to stop.  When I reached the crest of the next hill I was     │
  2135. │ halted by a blinding light.  There stood Anna.  I stopped and looked at    │

  2140. │ her.  She ordered, "Go no further than Great Britain.  Take your           │
  2141. │ vacation in England only and do not go beyond."                            │

  2143. │ The change in the sound of the jet engines woke me.  We were coming in     │
  2144. │ for our landing.  I collected my thoughts, or at least tried to do so.     │
  2145. │ I could not understand these warnings.  I was determined however, to       │
  2146. │ make this trip.  I had wanted it for too long to give it up now.           │
  2147. │ Especially on the bases of a dream.                                        │
  2148. │                                                                            │
  2149. │ When the plane touched down at Heathrow the sun was shining, dimly but     │
  2150. │ none the less shining.  It was typical June weather. My friends, Rod       │
  2151. │ and Audrey, were there to meet me, as expected.  My first night with       │
  2152. │ Rod and Aud was simple, but relaxing.  Audrey had to be in a               │
  2153. │ performance at the theater, after which, we went out for a late dinner.    │
  2154. │ Then home.                                                                 │
  2155. │ I was glad I had slept on the plane for a few hours.  Even though the      │
  2156. │ sleep was not sound because of the dream, it was still some sleep.  The    │
  2157. │ time change and jet lag was hard enough adjust to.                         │
  2158. │                                                                            │
  2159. │ My second, and first full day with Rod and Audrey was spent doing the      │

  2164. │ normal tourist bit. Audrey did not have to be at the theater until the     │
  2165. │ evening, as there was no matinee.  Rod runs his own import business so     │
  2166. │ he simply delegated authority so he could take whatever time he wanted.    │
  2167. │ We made a trip to Whitechapel, to the Tower of London and to Tower         │
  2168. │ Bridge.  I find this area to be most interesting.  You can almost hear     │
  2169. │ the sounds of the city as it was during Dickens' time.  I am somewhat      │
  2170. │ of a history buff, so I find things like this very stimulating.            │
  2171. │ I was not one for the normal tourist tripe, not really, and Rod and Aud    │
  2172. │ knew this.  I had grown up in fairly wealthy family and we had traveled    │
  2173. │ extensively throughout my growing years.  My father had died in an auto    │
  2174. │ accident when I was three.  My mother, on the other hand, is still         │
  2175. │ alive and is still fighting for her principals.  She was into women's      │
  2176. │ liberation long before it was fashionable.  She staunchly fought her       │
  2177. │ way into law school and then determinedly made her career choice to        │
  2178. │ become a judge.  The law became commonplace in our home.  I believe,       │
  2179. │ though Mother never once said anything, she truly expected me to go        │
  2180. │ into law as well.  Follow in her foot steps so to speak.  I found the      │
  2181. │ law too inflexible and cold, so I went into teaching.  My mother           │
  2182. │ thought this foolish, but accepted my choice without too much argument.    │
  2183. │ I suppose she knew I would be unhappy pursuing a career in law.  She       │

  2189. │ decision, though I am certain she surely felt some.  We did not agonize    │
  2190. │ over this difference of thought for she has great respect for my           │
  2191. │ convictions as do I for hers.  When you spend the greater portion of       │
  2192. │ your life living with just one other person you come to respect and        │
  2193. │ understand that person or you come to despise that person.  Fortunately    │
  2194. │ we came to respect and understand each other, as well as love one          │
  2195. │ another.                                                                   │
  2196. │                                                                            │
  2197. │ I had wanted her to meet me in Salzburg and take the tour with me          │
  2198. │ through the Black Forest.  She declined, due to commitments.  Which        │
  2199. │ simply meant two things, one she thought I should enjoy this trip alone    │
  2200. │ and meet new and interesting people without the influence from a mother    │
  2201. │ hanging on my neck.  And two, she did not want to take time away from      │
  2202. │ the bench.  She still has the same passion for the law that spurred her    │
  2203. │ on thirty one years ago.                                                   │
  2204. │ Rod, Audrey and I did manage to stop at Carey Street, the home of          │
  2205. │ barristers in London.  Rod took a picture of me in front of a stately      │
  2206. │ old building and we sent it off to my mother.  Rod jokingly wrote on       │
  2207. │ the bottom of the Polaroid picture, 'Future Barrister to the Queen!?!?'    │

  2215. │ On the third day, Rod insisted we go to this park in the heart of          │
  2216. │ London.  It is commonly referred to as Double Ganger park.  Legend says    │
  2217. │ if you go into this park and see your double it is an indication you       │
  2218. │ will die soon.  The three of us went, Aud and I reluctantly.  We both      │
  2219. │ knew Rod would attempt to play some sort of trick on us.  He has a         │
  2220. │ great sense of humor but sometimes carries things a little too far.  I     │
  2221. │ am not certain if I saw my double or if I was influenced by the power      │
  2222. │ of suggestion and the ribbing and teasing of Rod.  Audrey insists there    │
  2223. │ was nothing there.  I being more practical in nature wanted to believe     │
  2224. │ her.  Rod on the other hand insisted he had seen my double.  I             │
  2225. │ dismissed his statements.  Audrey pointed out the only person, as to       │
  2226. │ the legend, who could see their double was the person's who double         │
  2227. │ appeared.  This incident did not cause me any sleepless nights.  I only    │
  2228. │ mention it because it seemed to be the prelude to what was yet to come.    │
  2229. │                                                                            │
  2230. │ The rest of the day was spent dragging Rod through Harrods, the most       │
  2231. │ luxurious shopping area, probably in the world.  Then we made him take     │

  2237. │ payment for his practical jokes and teasing.                               │

  2239. │ We spent each of our evenings at the theater, waiting for Audrey to        │
  2240. │ finish.  One evening Rod and I did make it over to St. James Street to     │
  2241. │ Boodle's, an eighteenth century gambling club. It was here I met Thomas    │
  2242. │ Prescott, a friend of Rod's.  He was charming, to say the least.  He is    │
  2243. │ ruggedly good looking and a gentleman of some means.  I did enjoy his      │
  2244. │ company and wished, briefly, I could stay in London for a few more         │
  2245. │ days.  However, Mr. Prescott mentioned to Rod , as we were leaving the     │
  2246. │ club, he would be away on that holiday Rod had suggested, for a            │
  2247. │ fortnight.  Rod told me on the way back to the theater, where we were      │
  2248. │ to meet Audrey, that Prescott was a nobleman.  He worked in banking, a     │
  2249. │ major business in London.  (If you are not the flavor of the month with    │
  2250. │ the banks, in London, then you are not going to succeed in the business    │
  2251. │ world).  He had a lot of power in the city and more importantly, Rod       │
  2252. │ nudged my side, he is single.  I laughed and asked Rod if Aud knew he      │
  2253. │ had been attempting to match make.  "Are you kidding," he said, "she       │
  2254. │ was the one to come up with the idea in the first place." I choose not     │
  2255. │ to verify this with Audrey.  Though I did not believe Rod.                 │

  2263. │ when Rod and I got there.                                                  │

  2265. │ "So, what did you two do tonight?" Audrey questioned.                      │
  2266. │                                                                            │
  2267. │ "I took our friend to Boodle's", Rod responded.                            │
  2268. │                                                                            │
  2269. │ "Did you have dinner there?  Or did you decide to wait for me?"            │
  2270. │                                                                            │
  2271. │ "We decided to wait for you Aud." I responded.  "Where would you like      │
  2272. │ to go?"                                                                    │

  2274. │ "How about something different tonight?  Let's go home and I'll throw      │

  2286. │ we finished dinner, Rod excused himself and went into the library for      │
  2287. │ his evening cigar.  Audrey and I relaxed with a cup of coffee in the       │
  2288. │ sitting room.                                                              │
  2289. │                                                                            │
  2290. │ "Audrey," I started out cautiously, "do you believe dreams can be          │
  2291. │ meaningful.  I mean, do you think they can give you warnings?  Or come     │
  2292. │ true?"                                                                     │
  2293. │                                                                            │
  2294. │ "Yes, I suppose they can.  But I don't think I've ever had any dream       │
  2295. │ that gave me this feeling.  Why, what's happening with you?  I've          │
  2296. │ noticed you seem to be preoccupied with something.  What's troubling       │
  2297. │ you Carol?"                                                                │
  2298. │                                                                            │
  2299. │ "I've been having reoccurring dreams Aud.  I don't understand why.  But    │
  2300. │ the dream is the same each night or nearly the same.  I find myself        │
  2301. │ running down a flight of stairs, then when I get to the bottom of the      │
  2302. │ stairs I meet a friend of mine.  This friend is dead, in real life that    │
  2303. │ is, but in the dream she appears to be very much alive.  She warns me      │

  2318. │ the trip.  At first they were just strange dreams, feelings more than      │
  2319. │ anything.  I would wake and not remember anything but the feeling of       │
  2320. │ terror.  It was not fear either, it was terror."                           │

  2322. │ "I don't know much about dreams.  I do know a lot of people believe        │
  2323. │ they are indications of things to come.  But what their actual meaning     │

  2333. │ did not finish her sentence.  She sat looking past my shoulder, as if      │
  2334. │ transfixed by something behind me.  Audrey's face appeared to be           │
  2335. │ frozen.  I could not tell if she was held by fear or by astonishment.      │
  2336. │ I turned around to see what it was she was seeing.  There behind me,       │
  2337. │ over my right shoulder was a figure.  The figure was obviously not         │
  2338. │ solid, for I could see the painting on the wall behind it, through the     │
  2339. │ figure.  I looked at the face, but could not distinguish any features.     │
  2340. │ Suddenly it faded from view.  I turned back around, Audrey's face was      │
  2341. │ drained of all expression and color.                                       │
  2342. │                                                                            │
  2343. │ "Are you alright Audrey?" I asked, as I stood and moved over to the        │
  2344. │ couch and sat next to her.  "Are you alright?"                             │
  2345. │                                                                            │
  2346. │ She still did not answer.  She sat, looking at the area were the figure    │
  2347. │ had appeared.  I carefully and gently touched her arm.  She had no         │
  2348. │ reaction, it was as if she did not feel me or hear me.  Finally I          │
  2349. │ reached around in front of her and grabbed her other arm and pulled her    │
  2350. │ toward me, to twist her slightly so her body was no longer facing the      │
  2351. │ area the figure had appeared.                                              │

  2387. │ "Relax Aud," I responded as calmly as possible, as I broke the hold she    │
  2388. │ had on me.  "I have to make this trip.  No matter what the warnings, I     │
  2389. │ must make this trip."                                                      │

  2391. │ "Are you crazy?  Something terrible is going to happen.  You could ..."    │

  2413. │ "Well you could.  Just for safety's sake.  If nothing happens to the       │
  2414. │ people on the tour you were to take then you can have a good laugh         │
  2415. │ about it.  If something does happen, then you can count yourself           │

  2429. │ dreams I was not sure I could make the trip.  But now, after having        │
  2430. │ seen this figure, I know I must go.  But don't worry.  I'm not going       │
  2431. │ with total disregard to the consequences nor am I going without full       │
  2432. │ knowledge that something strange or odd lies before me."                   │
  2433. │                                                                            │
  2434. │ "I wish I could talk you out of this.  Had you said anything to your       │
  2435. │ Mother about your dreams?"                                                 │
  2436. │                                                                            │
  2437. │ "No I did not.  And don't you get any bright ideas," I could see the       │
  2438. │ wheels turning in Audrey's mind.  She was thinking of calling my Mother    │
  2439. │ and having her convince me not to go.                                      │

  2441. │ "Perhaps she could give you some insight on all of this.  I mean she is    │
  2442. │ a judge, she deals with facts all the time."                               │
  2443. │                                                                            │
  2444. │ "Precisely why she would not understand this.  Just stop thinking that     │
  2445. │ way.  All that would happen is we would end up in an argument, she         │
  2446. │ would be angry, I would be angry, and I would still go.  And then have     │
  2447. │ to deal with an angry Mother when I got home."                             │

  2454. │ sitting room.  She poured two brandys and came back, handed me one and     │
  2455. │ then sat down beside me once again.                                        │
  2456. │                                                                            │
  2457. │ "I don't know about you, but I need this.  I've never had an experience    │
  2458. │ like this before.  I hope I never have another one.  You surprise me       │
  2459. │ Carol, you seem to have taken this whole incident very calmly.  Have       │
  2460. │ you experienced this before?"                                              │
  2461. │                                                                            │
  2462. │ "No I haven't.  I surprise myself, Audrey.  I don't even know if I         │
  2463. │ believe in this sort of thing."                                            │
  2464. │                                                                            │
  2465. │ "I suppose that is why you don't feel it necessary to stay here. And       │
  2466. │ not go any further, as you've been warned."                                │
  2467. │                                                                            │
  2468. │ "I suppose."                                                               │

  2470. │ We both sat quietly, sipping at our brandy.  I did not want to talk any    │
  2471. │ further on this subject, and hoped Audrey could sense this.  Rod joined    │

  2477. │ got Rod his brandy and then the three of us sat and played a hot game      │
  2478. │ of Scrabble.  Audrey continued to let the events of the evening invade     │
  2479. │ even the Scrabble game.  She used words like psychic, haunt and even       │
  2480. │ ghost to win the game.                                                     │
  2481. │                                                                            │
  2482. │ At one thirty we all said good night and went off to bed.  I was once      │
  2483. │ again tormented in my dreams.  I found myself running down the same        │
  2484. │ proverbial flight of stairs, and Anna at the bottom of them.  I always     │
  2485. │ ran past her, but this time I did not run through the glade.  Instead I    │
  2486. │ was suddenly running down a beach.  I was having trouble running           │
  2487. │ because the sand was deep.  When I moved to the waters' edge it became     │
  2488. │ easier to run but suddenly I ran head long into a bright light.  This      │
  2489. │ light was different than the other times, it was as if it were a wall      │
  2490. │ of light and I could move no further.  I stopped and Anna stood before     │
  2491. │ me.  She warned me again not to take this trip.  She said that evil lay    │
  2492. │ before me and harm could come to me.  I woke at this point.  And again,    │
  2493. │ I choose to ignore the warning.                                            │

  2525. │ it was a means to keep her safe in war torn Europe.  She lived at the      │
  2526. │ sorority house for Jewish girls.  The year, 1940.  Then word came from     │
  2527. │ Germany and the young girl was told her parents had been killed in one     │
  2528. │ of the German concentration camps.  So distraught by the news and over-    │
  2529. │ come with grief the young girl hung herself.                               │
  2530. │ Today, 53 years later, the young girl still lives at the house.  Today     │
  2531. │ it is a the place for Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.  The members of the    │
  2532. │ fraternity don't find the girl's presence that peaceful however.           │
  2533. │ The room the girl reportedly hanged herself was room 310.  She tied a rope │
  2534. │ to a radiator then threw herself out the one large window in the room.     │
  2535. │ One frat brother had an embarrassing experience in this room.  He went out │
  2536. │ to take a shower and when he returned his roommate left the room, so he    │
  2537. │ could dress.  He had come back only in a towel and once his roommate left  │
  2538. │ he took the towel off and he suddenly heard a girl giggle.  He searched the│
  2539. │ room, he found nothing.  He had wrapped the towel around him once again.   │
  2540. │ Now he removed the towel again.  Again there was another giggle.  Again    │
  2541. │ he searched the room and found nothing.  He called out to his roommate, but│
  2542. │ his roommate obviously didn't hear him.  He was certain someone was playing│
  2543. │ a trick on him.  But when his roommate did return he was assured no joke   │

  2549. │ wearing only a towel then went to dress, they would hear a girl giggle.    │
  2550. │ Others who used this room reported more strange events.  Two other frat    │
  2551. │ brothers reported hearing footsteps at night, walking across the room then │
  2552. │ the wicker chair sounded as though someone was settling down in it.        │
  2553. │ One of the roomies, whose bed was right next to the wicker chair, reported │
  2554. │ hearing a female voice.  He got up many an evening to check out the room,  │
  2555. │ trying to make certain no one else was there.  But each time he found noth-│
  2556. │ ing.                                                                       │
  2557. │ Everyone staying in the room has complained of excessive heat.  But one    │
  2558. │ man decided to challenge the ghost.  He said openly to his frat brothers,  │
  2559. │ while he sat in the room working on his computer, "if any ghost wants to   │
  2560. │ come get me, I defy them to try."  Just as he completed his statement the  │
  2561. │ screen on his computer went completely blank.  He checked everything, the  │
  2562. │ CRT was plugged into the wall still, and was still connected to the comput-│
  2563. │ er.  But the switch to the CRT had been turned off.  No one, except him,   │
  2564. │ was near the machine and he had his back to the machine at the time.       │
  2565. │ If the story of the suicide is nothing more than legend then someone needs │
  2566. │ to explain some events that have taken place in this room.  One student,   │
  2567. │ renting the room during the summer session, reported seeing a young girl   │

  2574. │ neck and walk over to the window.  A moment later, the student reported,   │
  2575. │ the girl disappeared before his eyes.  The student told his roommate about │
  2576. │ this event and his roommate confessed he had seen the very same thing a    │
  2577. │ few nights before.  Since that time, neither of them would be in the room  │
  2578. │ alone.                                                                     │
  2579. │ The house just looks like it is haunted.  It stands high and commands a    │
  2580. │ presence by itself.  The Gothic windows and huge front porch promote an    │
  2581. │ even more eerie feeling.  If it had been planned, it could not have been   │
  2582. │ a more perfect looking house to have haunted.                              │
  2583. │ It is the frat house on the campus in Columbia, Missouri.  Reports of many │
  2584. │ different events still filter out into the press.  The press has a lot of  │
  2585. │ pleasure poking fun at the stories coming from the fraternity men.  But    │
  2586. │ those living in the house, and especially those in room 310, there isn't   │
  2587. │ much to laugh about.                                                       │
  2588. │ No formal investigation has ever been done.  No psychic has ever been call-│
  2589. │ ed in to try to put the woman to rest.  The perfect situation would be to  │
  2590. │ allow the lady to have the room to herself, but with all the students that │
  2591. │ won't be possible.                                                         │
